Project Management Lessons Learned from the Tay Bridge Disaster

Presentation Abstract

The Tay Bridge in Scotland opened on June 1st, 1878, and was the longest iron bridge in the world, a key link in the Scottish railway line, and an amazing feat of engineering. Unfortunately, on the night of December 28th, 1879, in one of the worst storms in living memory, the bridge collapsed, taking with it the Edinburgh train and 59 passengers. The subsequent public inquiry and later analysis identified several technical failures caused by greed and lack of leadership as the key reasons for the bridge failure.

In this thought-provoking presentation, Jim Benvie, a noted project management historian, will recount the events that led to one of the most disastrous physical and ethical project management failures in human history. Learning Outcomes will include:
• A project manager’s responsibility to ensure public safety above that of financial gain.
• The importance of the selection and supervision of a competent workforce.
• “The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool.” Richard Feynman

Speaker Bio

Jim Benvie PMP, DTM, AKA ‘The History PM’ is a project manager and speaker with TyauvinOn Solutions. His blog and presentations combine a lifelong passion for history with four decades of project and operational management experience, providing inspiration from history for project managers and leaders. His knowledge of history is very extensive, his engineering and Project Management knowledge is vast, and all his presentations are engaging. He also has the proven ability to extract relevant and valuable Project Management lessons and insights from significant historical events, both positive and negative.

Jim’s research has taught him not to simply copy historical precedents, but to use them to expand project manager and leader awareness, thought development, and curiosity stimulation. He believes that like Aesop’s Fables you will find the content both entertaining and informative. A long-term volunteer with PMI Houston, he lives with his wife Juliet in the Tomball, TX area and his interests are reading, studying history, and cycling. He is currently working as a project management consultant and develops project management training videos for ProjectBites (ProjectBites.com).

Ken has extensive experience in information systems strategy and deployment, business process re-engineering and capital project planning in several industry areas ranging from technology to oil and gas, to mining and health care.

Ken has also worked for national, state, and provincial governments, and with educational institutions. His specialties are project and portfolio planning, alignment, and risk reduction. He has also had considerable success in project intervention for troubled projects and working with and mentoring project managers on difficult projects in several industries. Dr. Ray's dynamic life has included military service, professional athletics, entrepreneurship, and project management. He currently serves as a Business Systems Analyst for the San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health, where he works on positive impactful projects that help others, and is proficient in liaising with stakeholders at all levels, including executive leadership, business operations, and third-party vendors. He has also published research and is eager to share his leadership philosophy in his upcoming book, The Assistant Janitor.
